KELLY RENOUF

Registered Psychologist, MA

Owner

(She/Her)

I was born and raised in Newfoundland in a small farming community outside of St. John’s affectionately known as “The Goulds”. I am the oldest of three children, raised mostly by a single, young mother who worked in healthcare. I completed my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 1998. Despite the wishes of my mother, I moved to Nova Scotia in 1999 to pursue a Masters of Arts degree in School Psychology at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU). I graduated from this program in 2001 and received the President’s Prize, an award given to graduates whose energy, generosity, and commitment have enriched the University during their time as students, and who show promise that their commitment will continue as alumnae.
As a new psychologist, my passion was in working with children with ADHD. I worked and trained in the ADHD Clinic at the Colchester Regional Hospital, providing assessments and interventions for children with attentional difficulties for three years. In 2007, my graduate research in the area of private speech in children with ADHD was published in Contemporary Educational Psychology; a peer-reviewed academic journal.
In 2003, I transitioned to the public school system full-time where I found my home in the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. Working within the public school system for 21 years, I was privileged to be able to work with students aged 5 to 21 with a wide variety of learning, behavioural, and emotional challenges. School psychologists see it all! As a member of various program planning teams, I had the opportunity to work with countless families, teachers, administrators, consultants, and outside agencies with the goal of better meeting the needs of students.
The practice of psychology has changed over the last 20 years as have my areas of interest. While I continues to enjoy working with children with ADHD, my current passions lie in mindfulness and complex developmental trauma. In 2014, I unexpectedly found myself at my first mindfulness retreat on a farm in upstate New York. From there, I sought certification in mindfulness from Mindful Schools; a non-profit organization in the US whose main goal is to bring mindfulness-based practices into schools to help support students and staff.  For several years, I, along with my colleague, Shannon Hartlen, developed and delivered a program to school staff called Mindfulness in Action (MIA) aimed at introducing and cultivating mindfulness-based practices with teachers with the goal of having them bring these practices into their work with students in their classrooms.
In 2015, my approach to psychology was also highly influenced by training I received at The Trauma Center in Massachusetts through Dr. Margaret Blaustein in treating complex childhood trauma. This training focused on the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) Treatment framework and the Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART). My view of behaviour was forever changed by this training and led to sweeping changes to how children with behavioural/emotional difficulties were understood and treated. I have since been influenced by the work of Dr. Daniel Siegel, Dr. Bruce Perry, Dr. Gabor Maté, and Stuart Shanker.
I currently reside in Mahone Bay with my husband, Jamie, son, Ethan, and our dog, Benny. When I'm not working, you will find me reading, relaxing on the beach, or sailing, hiking, and travelling with my family.  According to my son, I also seem to spend a lot of time cleaning and organizing.

Meaghan Hymers, M.Sc

Psychologist (Candidate Register)

(She/They)

I am a Psychologist (Candidate Register) licensed to provide in-person and/or virtual services in Nova Scotia. I hold a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.) degree from the University of Waterloo, where I studied both Psychology and Sexuality, Marriage and Family Studies. I completed my Master of Science (MSc) degree in Clinical Psychology at Acadia University. I have experience working with adults in both Community Mental Health & Addictions and private practice settings.

I strive to take an anti-oppressive and strengths-based approach to psychotherapy, informed by understandings of systemic barriers to wellness and de-pathologizing frameworks. It is my goal to provide a non-judgmental space where clients feel safe, valued, and understood.

I have training and experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT). I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, and I work collaboratively with my clients to tailor my therapeutic style to their unique needs and goals.

I have special interests in ADHD assessment and treatment, and supporting individuals who are struggling with difficult, “big” emotions. I particularly enjoy facilitating a supportive and affirming therapeutic environment for neurodivergent and 2SLGBTQ+ clients.

Dr. Penny Corkum, PhD

Registered Psychologist

(She/Her)

I have had a wonderful 25-year career as an academic and a registered psychologist. My goal has been to have a synergy between my clinical work and my research so that my clinical work informs my research and my research solves problems that are important to my clients. As a researcher, I have built and evaluated programs to help children sleep better and to help teachers know how to work better with children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and Learning Disabilities. I have published over 130 scientific journal articles detailing my research. I recently received a Distinguished Research Professor award by Dalhousie University, where I have worked since 2001 (prior to this I worked at Mount Saint Vincent University where I was fortunate to supervise a lovely, smart, and clinically gifted student – Kelly – the owner of Threshold Psychology!). In addition to research, I have also taught undergraduate and graduate students about child psychology. I have trained over 175 students how to conduct child assessments, which means I have trained many of the psychologists in Nova Scotia. While working as a professor, I also was active clinically and led an ADHD Clinic in Truro for 20 years. In 2025, I was awarded the Dr. Charles J.A. Hayes Lifetime Contribution Award from the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia, which was in recognition of my work supporting the profession of psychology at the provincial, national, and international level. In 2026, I was honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association in recognition of my contributions to research, teaching, clinical practice, leadership, and the mentorship of students and early-career professionals. I recently moved to the beautiful South Shore of NS and want to continue my clinical work in this area. It feels like home to be living in the South Shore as my ancestors were among the first settlers in the region. I love the beauty of this area and spend time enjoying this, particularly on the water!

Registered Counselling Therapist

(She/Her)

I am a Registered Counselling Therapist (candidate) licensed by the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. I completed my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in chemistry and my Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. I have always been passionate about working with adolescents so I began working as a junior high school French teacher in Hamilton, Ontario in 2016. In 2019 I participated in the CIS Ontario Supporting Student’s Wellbeing Conference and it helped cement my decision to change my career path to a focus on student mental health. Following the conference I became interested in bringing mindfulness into my school community. During the COVID-19 pandemic I ran a virtual mindfulness program for the entire school based on Dr. Laurie Santos’ “The Science of Wellbeing” course. When we returned to in-person learning I started a mindfulness club that focused on teaching co-regulation through grounding skills.  From 2019 to 2021 I volunteered as a Crisis Responder with Kids Help Phone and I gained valuable experience supporting youth experiencing a variety of mental health crises. In 2021 I began my Masters of Counselling Psychology with Yorkville University. By 2022, my husband and I had moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia where I completed my practicum placement at Veith House in the North End of Halifax. During my eight months of practicum at Veith House I supported low income adults coping with complex trauma. I graduated in May 2023 and began working as a Registered Counselling Therapist (candidate) supporting children and youth, many of whom were in the temporary or permanent care of the Minister of Community Services. Through this work I became interested in using mindfulness to help children and youth cope with emotional dysregulation, attachment difficulties, anxiety, ADHD, and depression. I have done training in play therapy and emotional regulation through the Crisis and Trauma Resource Institute and I use many aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) in my practice.  In May 2025 my daughter, Addison, was born. After a year of maternity leave I am excited to start supporting families in the Threshold Psychology community. I enjoy working closely with families to help them understand what is driving their children’s behaviour. My goal each session is to help both the child and their caregivers feel safe, seen, and supported.
